This is a critical reader that bring together many of the leading scholars and activists involved in understanding and proactively addressing the situation in Darfur, and in Sudan more generally. The volume is composed of a range of essays that engage in careful analysis of the historical, geo-political, military, social, environmental, and economic origins of the conflict, and reflect on the contemporary realities shaping the experiences of those living in the region. “Damascus: Tourists, Artists, Secret Agents” is a pseudo-fictitious encounter of artists, dancers, secret agents, speculative writers, lovers, film-makers and photographers who come together to unravel the rumours, questions and traces of the mysterious disappearances that happen in the subconscious urban setting of one of the world’s oldest cities.
The narrative takes place in Damascus in 2008. Three people suddenly disappear: Zaat al-Abed, a presumed secret agent, Leena Kilkka, curator of the Damascus Biennial, an event that never happens, and a flâneur, whose diary is accidentally lost and found… It is a textual and visual narrative, that emerged out of the collaboration of more than thirty international artists and writers. read more

The catologue was published In conjunction with the exhibition “Hidden Afghanistan” at the Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterdam (December 2007 – April 2008). The Dari & Pashtu edition of this catalogue are published as a part of the Prince Claus Fund Library in collaboration with Oxfam Novib. This book gives a breathtaking survey of the rich history and arts of ancient Afghanistan, revealed by a series of great archaeological excavations. Also, special attention is paid to the spectacular story of the evacuation and the return of many objects to the National Museum of Afghanistan in Kabul. read more
The Booklaunch took place on 31 January 2008 in the Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam. This is the first monograph on the work of this exceptional contemporary artist from Afghanistan. Born in Kabul in 1973, Lida Abdul left her native city five years after the Soviet invasion of 1979. She was sent to India, and lived in Germany in exile. Later she settled in the United States and did not return to Kabul for many years.When visiting Afghanistan again, she encountered total devastation in her native country. Lida Abdul uses diverse media including video, film, photography, installation and live performance in which she transfers the experience of war, invasion, destruction and fanaticism into the symbolic language of art. read more
Kaveh Golestan, the "Robert Capa of Iranian press photography", was the only photojournalist with a continued presence in Iran from before the revolution in 1979 until his premature death from a landmine in Northern Iraq in 2003. His monumental archive covers Iran's major political events as well as life of whole groups of people who were marginalised under the changing regimes.
