Efecto Cine - Travelling cinema promotes local productions in Uruguay

The Prince Claus Fund supported the first festival of Efecto Cine in Uruguay. Efecto Cine (Cinema Effect) is a travelling film exhibition across Uruguay that enables a large audience to see high quality films for free on outdoor locations. The Festival provided screenings in the outskirts of Montevideo and in 30 towns all over the country. The programme included 10 Uruguayan movies that were shown to promote film made by local film makers at places where it is hard and expensive to go to the cinema. Uruguay is a three million people country where half of its population lives in Montevideo. There are only 19 movie theatres in Uruguay, of which 16 in Montevideo (the capital city) and three in Punta del Este (the main seaside resort). The travelling exhibition by Efecto Cine made more than 10.000 kilometers within 4 month and reached 90.255 spectators. read more

Project of the Month September 2009:

Mother’s Day

The Prince Claus Fund supported the completion of post-production of a multi-channel audio visual installation entitled Mother's Day by audiovisual artist Smadar Dreyfus. Smadar is interested in how meaning is both created and reconstructed at the intersection of the aural and the visual. Through alternating sound recordings and silent images the viewer is placed in a position where one participates in, and becomes a part of an experience beyond spectatorship. read more

Art inside Prison, workshops for women in prison in Albania

The Prince Claus Fund supported a Cultural rehabilitation programme for Albanian women in prison consisting of workshops on artistic practices and by two Albanian artists who taught them about traditional handicrafts and social sculpture.
Refraction Association who organised the project is a non-profit Albanian organization. From the beginning it has been an active voice defending Human Rights of marginalized persons deprived by freedom, especially women and children. The vision of the organization is a safe society, building programs that improve skills and compose an infrastructure of services for rehabilitation and re-integration of persons in conflict with law.
Women in prison are a marginalized group that live apart from family and children without a social and cultural life. They are in a poor economic situation in prison and after they leave.
The workshops on traditional handicraft products in Ali Demi Prison, Tirana; had as an objective to demonstrate the value of the arts in social change; to reduce recidivism among sentenced minors through learning and creating places where women could not only spend their time on learning, but would also create an environment where learning and working was a kind of therapy to reduce recidivism. The works made during the project were shown in a mini-exhibition in prisons and after that in a final exhibition.

Workshop on animation and stop motion taught by Walter Tournier in Uruguay

Tournier Animation is an organization founded by Walter Tournier (Prince Claus Fund laureate 2002) that has been producing animation films since 1997, using a variety of techniques such as stop motion and clay figures among others. The subject of the productions include the value of human life and its surroundings, contributing through it to development and at the same time providing entertainment for a wide audience, but with particular interest in children.
The election of Stop-Motion as the principle technique is because it can be adapted and developed in countries like Uruguay.
Through workshops the project intends to train new people in the field and it intends them to define a truly authentic style, and to open new avenues for experimentation and creativity. As a result there will be new professionals that are capable to transmit through animation the values that are relevant for the individual and his/her cultural and natural context. The final products (8 clips of 30 seconds), because of their educational value, will probably not have the necessary quality for a wide distribution, but they will certainly fulfil the objective of creating a solid base for the future development of each one of the participants.
