"No society can survive without art and culture."

Minister Bert Koenders

Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Board of the Prince Claus Fund meets with the Dutch Minister for Development Co-operation once a year. The Minister is personally informed of the Prince Claus Fund’s development and progress. There are also regular consultations between the Fund’s Director and officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ministry is evaluating the Prince Claus Fund in 2010.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on support for culture in developing countries:

“Supporting the cultural sector in a number of developing countries is a goal in itself. One of the central tenets of development policy is the belief that people should help themselves. This requires creativity and self-awareness. Culture generates the energy and scope for working towards the Millennium Development Goals independently, welcoming inspiration from other countries and civilisations, and making and following through on choices without outside assistance.” (Art Without Borders, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, p. 7)

On its website, the Ministry describes development co-operation as follows:

“Development co-operation is one of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ principal tasks. The Netherlands is striving for a secure, stable and prosperous world. It is therefore working to combat poverty, injustice and conflict. This is an important starting point for not only the Netherlands’ foreign policy but also its development co-operation policy. For that reason, it invests in developing countries on a structural basis." “Along with such moral considerations as solidarity, justice and ideology, development co-operation is also in the Netherlands’ own interests. For development co-operation contributes to a peaceful and stable world, it promotes trade and employment, and helps to solve problems that individual countries cannot resolve on their own such as climate and energy issues, and the spread of disease.”
