The Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK) and the Prince Claus Fund organise a special evening of film screenings and a Q&A on Syrian cinema as part of the World Cinema Amsterdam festival. On 14 August 2012 two films from prominent Syrian filmmakers will be presented in Rialto Cinema in Amsterdam: Hey, Don’t Forget the Cumin (Arabic, English, French dialogue with English, Arabic subtitles) by Hala Al Abdallah and A Silent Cinema (French, Arabic dialogue with English subtitles) by Meyar Al Roumi.

Cumin revisits the last thirty years of Syrian history through the memories of a group of intellectual friends, poets, thinkers and artists whose life stories relate a fascinating perspective on modern Syrian cultural identity.

A Silent Cinema is a courageous short documentary that explores the challenging process of filmmaking in Syria. When the censors rejected his original script, Meyar Al Roumi was inspired to portray Syrian filmmakers who have been most affected by censorship.

BothHala Al Abdallah and Meyar Al Roumi will both be present for a Q&A.
