Hargeysa International Book Fair 2012
The Only Cultural Festival and the Largest Public Celebration in Somaliland
Somalia’s literacy rate is ranked in the bottom ten world-wide. Nevertheless, there is a great demand for reading among young people, particularly in Somaliland.
In response, the annual Hargeysa International Book Fair (HIBF) was established to promote a culture of reading and creative writing among the younger generations in Somali speaking society. Every July, HIBF hosts internationally and Somaliland based writers, poets, artists and thinkers to share and discuss their work. Through its Moving Library tour, regional reading clubs travel across Somaliland to deliver books and promote Somali literature. The festival is the largest public celebration in Somaliland: last year’s festival attracted more than 12,000 participants. HIBF’s role in increasing literacy and encouraging readership among youth clearly demonstrate its importance for the people in Somaliland.
